Heritage High School Elective Videos

Registration is under way at Heritage High School, and students have many choices to make regarding electives.  We hope the videos on this website will give information about many of our electives in order to help students make their selections.  A full listing of courses and course descriptions may be found in the 2012-2013 Course Catalog.  


Career and Technology

Education & Training, Child Development and Individual & Family Life
Education and Training, Child Development and Individual and Family Life are all courses to bring the students into a basic internship that provides knowledge of child and maturing development as well a effective training practices.  Whether it's learning the skills to prepare you to care for a child one day or skills to help you get a job in the future, these courses will prepare you for the real world.

Interior Design
Interior Design helps you to enhance the space in which you live and/or work.  It increases the creativeness when it comes to construction and furnishings, while showing the "employability characteristics."  This class makes the students use communication, tools, and equipment for creating and creative interior design.

Dollars and Sense
Dollars and Sense focuses on consumer practices and responsibilities, the money management process, decision-making skills, impact of technology, and preparation for human services careers. Students are encouraged to participate in career and technical student organizations and other leadership organizations.

Digital Graphics and Animation (DGA)
In this course students will explore the principles, concepts and methodologies associated with the creation of graphics and animation in a multimedia setting. The overall goal is to be able to create animated multimedia (movie productions both in 3D and 2D environments, including modeling). In addition, students will have the chance to explore user interaction and multi-user interaction with animated multimedia products. Software covered in this course will include: Adobe Photoshop, Maya Animation, and Flash. Course is project based and students must be self-motivated and willing to put in the time and effort necessary to complete projects.  This course is considered a Technology Applications course.
Journalism

Photojournalism
Photojournalism I is an elective where students learn photographic history, composition elements, media ethics, and explore digital camera techniques through a variety of projects.  Photographic selection based on composition elements and camera techniques for presentation will be emphasized.  Photojournalism I is a recommended prerequisite for students interested in applying for the yearbook staff.  Students should expect to spend a minimum of $60-$75 per semester for supplies and materials, excluding a camera. It would be to the student’s advantage to have a personal camera for use in class and at home.

Yearbook
Yearbook is a course that specifically addresses the multifaceted needs of the yearbook student by introducing him/her to all phases of yearbook production. In this course ten units of study will be explored. They include: audience and function, theme development, section development, reporting and writing, headlines, photos and captions, design, graphics. money matters and distribution. Student performance-oriented activities will be required as part of each unit. These activities have been formulated to not only reinforce the theory of yearbook journalism, but to actually promote the production of the current yearbook. Students enrolled in this course will be responsible for producing the school’s yearbook.

Fine Arts

Theatre 
Theatre Arts I general areas of study include but are not exclusive to the following: performance skills of improvisation, pantomime, mime, voice and diction, stage movement and acting. Additional areas explored are history of the theatre and careers in theatre. Technical aspects discussed are design concepts of lighting, sound, scenery, props, makeup, costumes and publicity. Students will be involved in many performance projects each grading period and written and visual projects throughout the year. Students are required to purchase a specific list of supplies totaling approximately $35.

Dance
Dance is a PE and Fine Arts and Athletic Credit.  Classes offered are Dance 1, 2, 3 and Drill Team.  Each class has a prerequisite of the dance class before in numerical order, starting with Dance 1.  To be on Drill Team, you must go through an audition process.  It is recommended to take a dance class before trying out.  You get to participate in a performance in the Spring to show off what you have learned throughout the year.  Sign up for a dance class today!

Heritage Highsteppers
To enroll in this class, the student must have been selected a member of the team during spring try-outs. Students will earn fine arts credit for this year long class. During the fall semester students will work on flexibility, anaerobic and aerobic activity, muscular strength and endurance, and technical skills training through precision dance in preparation for football halftime performances, pep rallies and special performances. During the spring semester, students will focus on dance as an art, exploring movement in various forms of dance and preparing for competition and show performances. Many practice hours in addition to the school day are required for membership. (Students will incur some expenses for uniforms, supplies, etc.)

HHS Choir
Choir is a way to express yourself using the talent inside of you.  Many types of choirs are available.  Whether you are a boy or a girl, you can release the instrument inside of you.  It gives you a full Fine Arts credit.  So, if you need a Fine Arts credit, join choir!

HHS Orchestra
Many opportunities are available at Heritage for students interested in learning to play an instrument, or who are interested in advancing their musical talents.  From marching band to symphony orchestra, music theory to jazz band, check out the Music Department today!
Art
AP Drawing
Use your drawing skills to make really creative pieces of art and have them be schowcased in the hallways.  Advanced Placement Drawing is a college level drawing portfolio class designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art.  If you are interested in AP Drawing, then sign up at registration!


English Language Arts

Independent Studies and Mentorship
In ISM, students focus their study on a topic of their choice. Students work on time management, communication, goal setting, and presentation skills.  They work with mentors at their place of business to gain "real world" experience.  Regular education students may apply for a waiver to gain entrance into this course.  Beginning with the Class of 2015, ISM shall receive a 5.5 GPA weight.  See the counseling office for more information.

Debate
Debate is for those students who enjoy arguing and persuading others to see their side of the argument.  Debate provides students with the ability to successfully argue their case, basic public speaking and other life skills.  Debate is an excellent choice for a student who wants to gain a little self confidence and even go to tournaments and competitions!  Check out debate as one of your electives!

Girls Athletics
Athletics offers a variety of different sports.  It encourages students to shine through athletic leadership and accomplishment.  Boys and Girls athletics can increase a person's confidence.  Some of the sports are Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Drill Team, Golf, Wrestling, Cheer and so much more!  Let's check out how you can be a Coyote Athlete!

Basic drawing, design, and painting will be taught through the understanding of the elements and principles of art.





Medical Terminology
prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, and singular and plural forms, plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.
This course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including 

Art II is an intensive yearlong course in basic drawing, design, and painting with some three dimensional work designed to challenge the students who are planning to take advanced art classes. First semester skills are needed to be successful in semester two.

Art I will include both two and three-dimensional art. This is a yearlong course in which first semester skills are needed to be successful in semester two.
